First prize of 2019 Carl Nielsen competition

Joséphine Olech

Odense Symphony Orchestra Prize

Junior Jury Prize

I still cannot believe it 100 percent… I am feeling many things, but mostly very happy to be rewarded for my hard work, very grateful to all the people around me who made it possible, relieved to take a real holiday, but also extremely excited for all the nice projects to come, such as recording a CD and many concerts.

Having an orchestra job makes it difficult to find time to prepare all this solo repertoire. I couldn’t focus on the Nielsen preparation “full time”, so I had to find solutions. I tried to use the time I spent in the train, the bus, the subway, to listen to different recordings of the pieces, and try to learn them by heart. I was also playing my concertos in my head before going to sleep, to train my memory.

It was also the first time I prepared a competition almost by myself – without a teacher (I stopped studying last year). I played my program to two teachers shortly before going to the competition, but I had done most of the work alone.

I tried to get some good sleep because such a competition requires a huge amount of energy.

And, more importantly, I tried to not panic, stay very calm, and positive through all the preparation. When I arrived in Denmark for the competition, I was feeling ready because I knew I did everything I could!

I think these challenges are very much about mental training. If you believe you can do it, you find unexpected resources.

If I have one advice for preparing such a competition, it’s to stay positive, stay calm, focused, and save your energy.

My mother is a piano teacher, so I was hearing music at home when I was little. I fell in love with the flute for some reason (I can’t remember why!) and started the recorder at 6 years old (I was too small to hold a traverse flute) and the traverse flute at 7 years old.

I think music is about sharing. Sharing emotions and messages. Sometimes I wish I would be a singer because they can communicate real words… When I play, I have the feeling that I am talking to the audience, as if I was telling them a story. I also like to connect as much as I can with the people playing with me on stage (pianist, orchestra…) , because I believe chemistry on stage will be heard by the audience. As Johann Joachim Quantz says in his book, “What doesn’t come from the heart cannot reach the heart”.

My teachers over the years have of course been a huge inspiration to me. But the person playing the most important role in my life at the moment is my boyfriend, who is a wonderful pianist. He understands everything I go through, and we help each other through different challenges. I wouldn’t be there without him!

The lastest highlight moment is the Carl Nielsen Competition of course!

Before that, I can think of three other moments that changed my life: entering Paris Conservatoire, playing one year as academist in Concertgebouw Orchestra, and entering the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as solo flute.

It’s very hard to chose! It depends on my mood…

In the orchestra, my favorite composers are Brahms, Mahler, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ravel and Debussy of course…

But when I practice alone in my room, I love to practice baroque composers such as Bach, CPE Bach, Telemann. I feel like you can practice them all your life and always discover new things…

When I was 12 I entered a new school dedicated to music, and from that moment on it happened very naturally. I never felt the need to do something else!

The thing I will remember most is the people who I met there. Competitions are a great opportunity to meet flutists from all over the world and make new friends.

But of course, I keep a very strong memory of every round I passed, and especially the moment which I find most difficult the results announcements!

I am a big Netflix client 🙂 But I also like to read, go running, do yoga, have drinks with my friends and go to concerts. Nothing very original!

On the musical side, I will enjoy a full and exciting season with solo concerts, orchestra concerts, and a CD recording.

For the rest, my next projects are decorating my new house, becoming fluent in Dutch and learning how to drive a car!

I’m crazy about food in general ! I’m a vegetarian and I like to cook. I’m happy whenever there are vegetables in my plate.

But I guess my weak spot is cakes. (In my orchestra I have a cake club with some colleagues and we bring homemade cakes to rehearsals…. :p )

I am very much looking to come to Taiwan in June for orchestra concerts in Kaoshiung and a sonata recital in Taipei !! I can’t wait to see you there!
